Is It Worth Upgrading Your GPU or Console This Holiday?
AMD's FSR 4.1 reached Radeon RX 6000 cards on Oct 20, 2026 as a free driver update. What to try before you buy, refurbished options, and new GPU and console prices checked Oct 23, 2026.

New graphics cards and consoles cost more this holiday than many people expect. Before you spend $500 or more, check two cheaper moves first: update your driver, then look at used or refurbished. This guide walks through both, then shows what new costs right now at a few big US stores.
Short answer
- Radeon RX 6000 owners: update your driver before you buy anything. AMD's FSR Upscaling 4.1 is now available for Radeon RX 6000 Series cards in the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 driver or newer (AMD release notes, checked Oct 23, 2026).
- Xbox Series X|S owners: AMD says FSR Upscaling 4.1 is "coming soon" to Xbox Series X|S consoles. AMD gives no date (AMD newsroom, checked Oct 23, 2026).
- Still want something new? Look at used and refurbished first. See our guide to eBay open-box and refurbished deals, and the refurbished prices below.
Step 1: the free update (AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1)
On Oct 20, 2026, AMD released FSR Upscaling 4.1 support for more hardware. Here is exactly what AMD lists, and nothing more:
- AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards: available now in the Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 driver. AMD's release notes list "AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 support for: AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series Graphics products."
- Ryzen processors: AMD lists only Ryzen AI Max processors, laptops with Ryzen AI 9 processors, and gaming handhelds with Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme or Ryzen Z2 A processors. Other Ryzen chips aren't on AMD's list.
- Xbox Series X|S: "coming soon," with no date from AMD.
AMD says RX 6000 owners "will experience a significant leap in image quality over the FSR 3.1 solution that was previously available," and that "Gamers will get more from the hardware they already own" (AMD newsroom, Oct 20, 2026). AMD also notes: "Feature availability and release timing may vary by device."
The driver's release notes also list known issues. Read them before you install: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 release notes.
If your card already handles the games you play at the settings you like, the driver update may be all you need this year.
Step 2: keep, buy used or refurbished, or buy new?
- Know what you have. Write down your graphics card model, your monitor's resolution and refresh rate, and the games that feel slow. A new card won't help much if your monitor or the game is the limit.
- Do I need a new CPU too? Maybe. If an older processor is already holding your PC back, a faster graphics card may not help much. Check your power supply, case space and connectors before you buy a card, too.
- Price used and refurbished first. A refurbished console or a used card from the last generation can cost less than new; the refurbished table below shows the gap for consoles. Compare the condition, the warranty and the return window before you buy.
- Read the store's return terms. Check the store's own return and price-adjustment pages. See our holiday return policies and price match policies guides.
- Check the deal itself. Our guide on how to verify a deal is real shows how to check a "sale" price before you buy.

Why consoles cost more than they did at launch
Both makers announced price increases this year:
- Xbox: "Effective August 1, 2026, we will be updating prices worldwide. The price of XBOX consoles will increase by US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models." (Xbox Wire, June 25, 2026)
- PlayStation: Sony's US recommended retail prices, effective April 2, 2026, are PS5 $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 and PS5 Pro $899.99 (PlayStation Blog, March 27, 2026).
Holiday price protection and returns
Microsoft's own terms on its Xbox Series S page (Microsoft Store, checked Oct 23, 2026) say:
- "Holiday extended price protection valid on purchases of qualifying physical consumer products purchased from Microsoft Store online and Microsoft Experience centers in select markets between October 1, 2026 – December 2, 2026. Holiday purchase price adjustment may be requested until January 31, 2027."
- "Holiday purchases made during that window can be returned through January 31, 2027."
These are Microsoft's terms, and Microsoft can change them; read the full terms on its page. For Best Buy and other stores, see our price match policies and holiday return policies guides. To time a bigger purchase, see Black Friday 2026 dates. If you updated your driver and want something new to play, our PC game sale calendar lists upcoming store sales.
