What $100 Oil Means for Your Gas and Grocery Bill (Oct 2026)
Brent crude is above $100. As of Oct 24, 2026: EIA's Brent spot price was $115.22 on Oct 20, AAA's national average for regular is $4.2957, and each $1 a barrel works out to about 2.4 cents a gallon. Groceries have moved far less: food at home was up 1.8% over the year to September.

The short answer
- Brent is above $100. EIA's spot price for Brent crude was $115.22 a barrel on Oct 20, 2026, and US crude (WTI at Cushing, Oklahoma) was $107.89 (EIA spot prices table released Oct 21; read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC).
- Gas: AAA's national average for regular was $4.2957 a gallon on 10/24/26, up from $3.0679 a year ago (AAA; read Oct 24, 2026 09:07 UTC). EIA's weekly US average was $4.284 for the week of Oct 19, 2026, $1.265 more than a year earlier (EIA, released Oct 20; read Oct 24, 2026 09:07 UTC).
- The rule of thumb: a $1-per-barrel change in crude works out to about 2.4 cents a gallon of gasoline, because a barrel holds 42 gallons (EIA; read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC). So $10 a barrel is about 24 cents a gallon, if nothing else changes.
- Groceries: so far, much less. Over the 12 months to September 2026, the CPI for food at home rose 1.8% while the gasoline index rose 34.2% (BLS, released Oct 14, 2026; read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC). USDA's Economic Research Service, in its Food Price Outlook updated Oct 23, 2026, forecasts food-at-home prices up 2.3% for 2026 (read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC). That is a food-price forecast, not an estimate of oil's effect on groceries.
Where oil prices are (EIA spot prices)
Gasoline prices in the US track Brent, the international benchmark, more closely than WTI, according to EIA's analysis, so Brent is the number to watch for the pump (EIA Today in Energy; read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC).
| Crude benchmark (dollars per barrel) | Oct 13, 2026 | Oct 16, 2026 | Oct 20, 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brent (Europe) | $125.78 | $119.33 | $115.22 | EIA spot prices, released Oct 21, 2026 (read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC) |
| WTI (Cushing, Oklahoma) | $95.39 | $108.21 | $107.89 | EIA spot prices, released Oct 21, 2026 (read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC) |
Oct 20, 2026 is the latest day in EIA's table as we read it; EIA's next release is Oct 28. These are EIA spot prices. News reports often quote futures prices, a different measure, so numbers you see elsewhere may not match.
From crude to the pump: the math
- 2.4 cents per $1. EIA's general guideline: a $1-per-barrel change in the price of crude oil translates into a change of about 2.4 cents per gallon of gasoline (2.4 cents is about 1/42 of $1) (EIA Today in Energy, Nov 3, 2014; read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC).
- Not all at once. Dallas Fed research found that about 12% of a crude price increase shows up at the pump the same day, rising to about 50% after 20 working days, and about 55% in the long run (measured as a share of the percentage change). In its most recent sample, about 60% had passed through after 20 working days (Dallas Fed, Oct 1, 2019; read Oct 24, 2026 09:09 UTC).
- Prices go both ways. The same Dallas Fed article notes that when Brent fell about $35 a barrel in late 2018, US retail gasoline fell about 65 cents a gallon.
- Worked example (arithmetic, not a forecast): if Brent moved $10 a barrel and stayed there, and refining, distribution and taxes didn't change, EIA's guideline points to about 24 cents a gallon. For a 15-gallon fill-up, that is about $3.60.
What's in a gallon
Crude oil is the biggest single piece of what you pay at the pump, but it's not the only one. EIA's breakdown for May 2026:
| Share of the retail price | Regular gasoline (May 2026, $4.48/gal) | Diesel (May 2026, $5.60/gal) |
|---|---|---|
| Crude oil | 52% | 42% |
| Refining | 22% | 25% |
| Distribution and marketing | 15% | 23% |
| Taxes | 12% | 11% |
Source: EIA Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update, "What we pay for in a gallon of" chart (read Oct 24, 2026 09:07 UTC). For all of 2025, crude oil was 51.4% of the average $3.10 gallon of regular (EIA Gasoline explained; read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC). The federal gasoline tax is 18.40 cents a gallon, and state taxes and fees averaged 33.55 cents a gallon as of January 2026 (same EIA page).

AAA and EIA use different surveys and dates, so their averages don't match exactly. EIA's retail prices include all taxes. Your local price can be well above or below the national average.
Why oil reaches groceries later, and less
- Energy is one cost among many. USDA's Food Dollar series splits what we spend on food into the farm share and the costs of processing, transporting and selling it, and it counts energy as one of the industry groups in that chain (USDA ERS Food Dollar; read Oct 24, 2026 09:10 UTC). Crude oil is one input, not the price tag.
- Transport fuel costs more. Transporting food is one of those marketing costs, and diesel averaged $6.276 a gallon for the week of Oct 19, 2026, $2.656 more than a year earlier (EIA, released Oct 20; read Oct 24, 2026 09:07 UTC).
- The lag. Because of the many processing stages in the US food system, USDA says retail food prices (the CPI) typically lag wholesale prices (the PPI) (USDA ERS Food Price Outlook, updated 10/23/2026; read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC).
- What the data shows so far: in September 2026, food at home fell 0.1% from August (seasonally adjusted) and was up 1.8% from a year earlier; all food was up 2.5% and food away from home up 3.5%. The gasoline index rose 9.1% in the month and 34.2% over the year (BLS CPI, September 2026, released Oct 14, 2026; read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC).

What EIA expects
EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook (released Oct 6, 2026; forecast completed Oct 1, 2026; read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC) says:
- Brent will average $105 a barrel in the fourth quarter of 2026, $14 higher than in the previous month's outlook, then fall to an average of $84 in 2027. EIA's 2026 annual average for Brent is $96.
- Retail gasoline averages $3.91 a gallon for 2026 and $3.56 for 2027 ("just under $3.60").
- Retail diesel averages $5.19 a gallon for 2026 and $4.49 for 2027 ("about $4.50"). EIA points to extreme tightness in diesel markets.
EIA says the outlook doesn't specifically account for market events after Oct 1, 2026. That's EIA's forecast, not ours. The next outlook is due Nov 10, 2026.

Quick answers
Is oil over $100 a barrel right now?
Brent is. EIA's spot price for Brent crude was $115.22 a barrel on Oct 20, 2026, and WTI at Cushing, Oklahoma was $107.89, the latest day in EIA's spot prices table released Oct 21 (read Oct 24, 2026 09:08 UTC).
How much does gas go up when oil goes up $10 a barrel?
About 24 cents a gallon, using EIA's guideline that a $1-per-barrel change works out to about 2.4 cents a gallon, if refining, distribution and taxes don't change. Dallas Fed research found the effect builds over time: about 12% the same day and about 50% after 20 working days, measured as a share of the percentage change in crude.
What is the national average gas price today?
AAA's national average for regular was $4.2957 a gallon on 10/24/26 (read Oct 24, 2026 09:07 UTC). EIA's weekly average was $4.284 for the week of Oct 19, 2026.
Why is diesel so much more expensive than gas?
EIA's weekly averages for the week of Oct 19, 2026 were $6.276 a gallon for diesel and $4.284 for regular. In EIA's May 2026 breakdown, refining was 25% and distribution and marketing 23% of the diesel price, versus 22% and 15% for gasoline, and EIA's October outlook points to extreme tightness in diesel markets.
Will grocery prices go up because of $100 oil?
We don't forecast prices. So far the effect is much smaller than at the pump: BLS says food at home was up 1.8% over the 12 months to September 2026, while gasoline was up 34.2%. USDA ERS's Food Price Outlook (updated Oct 23, 2026) forecasts food-at-home prices up 2.3% for 2026; that is a food-price forecast, not an estimate of oil's effect.
What does EIA forecast for gas prices?
EIA's Oct 6, 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook has retail gasoline averaging $3.91 a gallon in 2026 and $3.56 in 2027, and Brent averaging $105 a barrel in the fourth quarter of 2026 and $84 in 2027. EIA says it doesn't account for events after Oct 1, 2026.
Why do gas prices follow Brent instead of US oil?
EIA's analysis found that Brent, the international benchmark, matters more than WTI for US gasoline prices in all regions it studied, because gasoline is traded globally.
When will these numbers be updated?
EIA's next weekly gasoline and diesel release is Oct 27, 2026, its next spot prices release is Oct 28, and the next Short-Term Energy Outlook and the October CPI both come out Nov 10, 2026. We plan to refresh this page after those releases.
