Black Friday price errors: will my order be cancelled?

What Amazon, Best Buy and other retailers' own terms say about mispriced orders, why an order confirmation is not a guarantee, and how to tell a real Black Friday deal from a pricing mistake.

Black Friday is the one week of the year when a giant discount is normal. That makes it harder to tell a planned doorbuster from a real pricing mistake, and it raises an obvious question: if you catch a price that looks wrong, will the order actually ship?

The honest answer is that it depends on the retailer, the seller and whether the price really was a mistake. Retailers write their own rules about this into their terms, so the best thing you can do is read what they say. Here is what the big ones' own terms say, in plain English. This is general information, not legal advice.

What retailers' own terms say

Amazon

Amazon's Conditions of Use have a Pricing section. It says that for items sold by Amazon, it "cannot confirm the price of an item until you order," that a small number of items may be mispriced, and that if the correct price is higher than the stated price, Amazon will, at its discretion, either contact you for instructions before shipping or cancel the order and notify you. It also notes that other merchants on Amazon may follow different policies. The same page says Amazon generally does not charge your card until the order enters the shipping process.

So on Amazon, check who the item is sold by. A third-party seller's policy may differ from Amazon's. Our Amazon price errors guide covers how to check.

Best Buy

Best Buy's Terms and Conditions say it cannot confirm the availability or price of a product until you place your order, and that if a product is mispriced it may cancel your order or contact you for instructions. The terms also say the order confirmation "does not signify our acceptance of your order," and that Best Buy may accept, decline or limit an order for any reason. If it cancels a portion it already charged, it says it will refund that amount.

Other stores

Most big retailers have similar language. Before you count on a price, open the store's terms page and search it for "pricing," "mispriced" or "errors." For a broader look at the legal question, read do stores have to honor price errors?

Confirmation is not the same as shipped

The pattern in these terms is the same: the retailer treats your order as an offer, and the sale isn't final until it accepts. In practice, the order is often only safe once it has shipped. Until then, a cancellation email is possible. That's normal and not a sign anything is wrong with your account.

Is it a Black Friday deal or a price error?

Most "wow" prices in late November are planned. A few quick checks help:

Quick answers

Does an order confirmation email mean the retailer has to honor the price?

Not usually. Best Buy's terms say its order confirmation does not signify acceptance of your order, and Amazon's Conditions of Use say it cannot confirm the price of an item until you order. Read each retailer's current terms.

What does Amazon do if an item it sells is mispriced?

Amazon's Conditions of Use say that if the correct price of an item sold by Amazon is higher than the stated price, Amazon will, at its discretion, either contact you for instructions before shipping or cancel your order and notify you. Other merchants on Amazon may follow different policies.

Is every huge Black Friday discount a price error?

No. Most big Black Friday prices are planned promotions. We only call something a price error or glitch when we have evidence the price was a mistake.
