How to buy hyped items at retail price: invites, queues and drops, in each store's own words
Best Buy invites, Pokémon Center queues, Walmart+ early access, Target alerts and GameStop Pro limits, quoted from each store's own pages. No guarantees, no bypass tools. Checked Oct 20, 2026.
Nothing here guarantees you'll get one. Stores don't publish odds, and stock is limited by design. Every store rule below is quoted from the store's own page, checked Oct 20, 2026 (UTC times in the sources list). Links on this page are plain links, not affiliate links.
The short version
- Ask for every official invite you qualify for, on the store's own site or app.
- Use one account, one email and one device per store. Pokémon Center says extra emails can get an invite voided.
- Keep your account, payment and shipping details accurate and up to date before a drop.
- Turn on the store's own app notifications and back-in-stock alerts. They don't reserve stock.
- Skip queue "bypass" tools. Pokémon Center says workarounds don't help.
- Know the return rules before you buy. Best Buy doesn't take back trading cards once purchased.
Best Buy invites ("Exclusive sales event")
High-demand items like Pokémon cards sometimes go on sale at Best Buy by invite only. The product page says: “Available by invitation. This is a high-demand product with limited supply. Anyone can ask for an invite, but not everyone will get one.” (Best Buy product page, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:14 UTC).
How it works, in Best Buy's words
- Let us know you’re interested: “Request your free invite by signing in or creating an account.”
- Download the app: “Don't miss out! If selected, we'll email you, but you can also download the Best Buy app and enable notifications for real-time alerts.”
- Wait for your invite: “We’ll only contact you if you’re selected, and your invite will include event details.”
After you ask, the page says: “If you’re selected to participate in this event, you’ll receive an invitation with event details.” How long you have to buy is part of those event details, so read your invite rather than relying on a number you saw online.
Who gets picked
Best Buy's "How it works" box says: “Selection criteria may include purchase history, membership status, and other factors.” It doesn't publish odds or say how those factors are weighed, and it doesn't call the system a lottery.
Do Best Buy memberships help?
Best Buy's membership FAQ says: “A My Best Buy membership is free. A My Best Buy Plus™ membership, which includes additional benefits, is $29.99 per year. A My Best Buy Total™ membership, which includes all the benefits of a Plus membership and more, is $199.99 per year.” (My Best Buy FAQs, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:17 UTC). Best Buy only says "membership status" may be one criterion. It doesn't say a paid membership gets you an invite, so we wouldn't pay for one just for this.
Can you return it?
No, if it's trading cards. Best Buy's return policy (effective Feb. 23, 2026) says: “The following items from Best Buy and Marketplace Sellers are nonreturnable once purchased:” ... “trading cards (including Pokémon cards)” (Best Buy return and exchange policy, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:17 UTC).
Pokémon Center: virtual queue and Invite Only
The virtual queue
Pokémon Center's support article on its virtual queue (updated Oct. 15, 2025; Pokémon Center Virtual Queue, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:15 and 06:34 UTC) says:
- “If you are currently in line to enter Pokémon Center, please keep the virtual queue window open.”
- “Do not refresh your browser or move away from the page. You will be redirected to the site automatically when it is your turn to enter.”
- “Opening Pokémon Center in multiple tabs, using alternate links, or attempting any workarounds will not help you bypass the virtual queue, and those actions may result in other technical errors.”
- “Waiting in line does not guarantee product availability, and some products may be out of stock or unavailable for purchase.”
- “Adhere to Pokémon Center purchase limits, which are displayed on the product page.”
- “Refrain from using a VPN.”
It also says: “Customer support agents are not able to assist with questions or issues with the virtual queue.”
Invite Only
From Pokémon Center's Invite Only FAQ (updated Oct. 6, 2026; Pokémon Center Invite Only FAQ, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:18 and 06:34 UTC):
- “The Pokémon Center Invite Only program (formerly known as Early Access) allows selected customers the opportunity to purchase popular items before they are more widely released.”
- “Customers who are subscribed to the Pokémon Center newsletter and meet specific criteria are eligible to be selected for the Invite Only program.” “Note that Pokémon Center does not share eligibility criteria.”
- “Currently, only customers in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom are eligible to be selected to participate in the Invite Only program.”
- “Meeting eligibility criteria does not guarantee a chance to participate.”
- “Creating multiple subscriptions or using different email addresses does not increase the likelihood of receiving an invitation to participate in the Invite Only program.” “Such actions may result in the invitation being voided.”
- “The invitation link is unique to you, and it is not transferable.” “Each invitation link is unique and can only be used once.”
- “We recommend using only one device and browser to open the invitation link, shop, and check out.”
- “Receiving an Invite Only invitation does not guarantee item availability. Item quantities are limited and available while supplies last.”
Checkout tips Pokémon Center gives
Its 30th Celebration TCG FAQ (updated Aug. 24, 2026; 30th Celebration TCG FAQ, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:17 and 06:34 UTC) lists: “Create an account or log in to your account instead of ordering as a guest.” “Manually fill out all information fields on the checkout pages as autofill can cause issues.” “Use your own trusted and accurate address rather than an alternate or forwarding address.” On restocks it says: “We are not able to share whether 30th Celebration products will be restocked or when they will be restocked.”
Walmart: Walmart+ early access
Walmart's Walmart+ page lists "Early Access": “Be first to shop hot online Deals for Black Friday & more.” “Available to paid Walmart+ members only. Online only. While supplies last” (walmart.com/plus, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:14 UTC).
For its June 22–28, 2026 Walmart Deals event, Walmart said “eligible* Walmart+ members will enjoy Early Access to an online-only curated assortment of high-demand hot Deal drop items in the first 24 hours of the event, while supplies last.” It added: “*The following W+ members are not eligible for the event early access benefit: $1 trial members, free trial W+ Student & W+ Assist members.” (Walmart corporate news, June 9, 2026, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:14 UTC). Rules can change by event, so check the current event's terms.
We didn't find a current Walmart help page on how its online queue works, so we don't describe one here.
Target: alerts and limits
Target's help page on back-in-stock notifications says: “Opting in to receive notifications doesn’t reserve or guarantee item availability, so you may want to act fast in the event the item goes out of stock again. Exclusions may apply for high demand or limited items. The notification feature doesn’t apply to store inventory.” (Target Help: out-of-stock notifications, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:14 UTC).
On limits, Target's Price Match Guarantee page says: “We reserve the right to deny purchase and limit quantities per guest.” (Target Help: Price Match Guarantee, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:14 UTC).
We didn't find a Target help page with rules for online drops or queues, so we don't describe any.
GameStop: Pro and purchase limits
GameStop's help center says: “A GameStop Pro membership costs $29.99 per year (plus applicable taxes).” Among the listed benefits: “NEW!: Double Purchase Limits on Most Trading Card Products!!!”, “Pro-exclusive deals and product drops” and “Four Pro Weeks / Pro Events per year” (GameStop help: Pro membership price, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:16 UTC). On Pro Weeks, GameStop adds: “These examples show the types of savings offered—not guaranteed deals.” (GameStop help: Pro Weeks, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:14 UTC).
We didn't find GameStop rules for raffles or in-store release events, so we don't cover them here.
What the resale price tells you
The reason the lines exist is the gap between retail and resale. Best Buy lists the Pokémon TCG Prismatic Evolutions Elite Trainer Box at $49.99 (Best Buy product page, checked Oct 20, 2026, 06:14 UTC). Its TCGplayer market price was $126.45 when we checked on Oct 22, 2026, 11:10 UTC (TCGplayer). Market prices change every day, so treat that as a snapshot, not a quote.
A gap that size means far more people want the item than there are units, which is the situation invites and queues are built for. Paying a resale markup is a choice: if a store still sells the item at retail, ask for its invite or set its alert first.
What not to do
- Don't sign up with extra emails. Pokémon Center says extra subscriptions or email addresses don't raise your chances of an invite, and: “Such actions may result in the invitation being voided.”
- Don't use queue workarounds or extra tabs. Pokémon Center says they “will not help you bypass the virtual queue, and those actions may result in other technical errors.”
- Don't use a forwarding address. Pokémon Center asks you to use “your own trusted and accurate address rather than an alternate or forwarding address.”
- Don't pay for a membership expecting a guaranteed invite. No store we checked promises one.
