Sam's Club price endings: what .91, .01 and the letter codes mean

What employees and shoppers say Sam's Club price endings and tag letters mean, what Sam's Club itself has said, and why the sources don't fully agree.
Sam's Club price endings get a lot of attention, and the answers online don't all agree. Sam's Club hasn't confirmed any of them, so here's what each source says.
What Sam's Club has said
Asked by CBS Texas, Sam's Club's director of corporate communications said: "We aren't able to confirm our pricing strategies."
Price endings: where sources agree and disagree
- .99: full price, per the Rakuten blog.
- Ending in 1 (like .91 or .81): the Rakuten blog says discounted items end in a 1, like .91. Sam's Club's own online clearance page lists many prices ending in .91 and .81 when we checked on Oct 16, 2026.
- Ending in .01: a Sam's Club employee told CBS Texas that anything ending in one cent has been discontinued and is being sold "far below the price we paid for it."
- .98 and others: The Krazy Coupon Lady says clearance prices usually end in .98, .81, .91 or .00, but found a regular-priced mirror at $59.98. So these endings can show up on full-price items.
Letter codes on the shelf tag
CBS Texas and Rakuten report a letter after the item number:
- C: canceled/discontinued, won't be restocked.
- A: active item.
- N: "never out," always stocked.
Online clearance
Sam's Club's clearance page says its listed clearance items are available online, that selection changes often, and that the "discount varies between 10% and 60%." Prices may differ in club and online.
