RAM prices in 2026: is now a bad time to buy RAM or build a PC?
Updated October 22, 2026. Every figure below names its source and date; sources read Oct 22, 2026, 11:33โ11:34 UTC. This is not investment advice, just a buying guide.
Short answer: RAM is very expensive right now. Tom's Hardware found the cheapest 32GB DDR5-6000 kit at $449.97 on Oct 14, 2026, and TrendForce expects DRAM supply to stay tight in 2027 (Sep 30, 2026). If you need RAM now, buy only what you need, look at open-box and bundle options, and don't count on Black Friday to fix prices. If you can wait, waiting costs you nothing. Checked Oct 22, 2026.
Why is RAM so expensive right now?
Demand from AI servers is taking memory capacity away from PCs. TrendForce said on Sep 30, 2026 that DRAM suppliers continue to prioritize advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products, keeping the overall market undersupplied, and that PC makers keep buying aggressively because they expect DRAM supply to remain tight in 2027 (TrendForce, Sep 30, 2026). Its Oct 12, 2026 Weekly Radar put DRAM lead times at 20 weeks, against 8 weeks in a balanced market, and said suppliers are shifting supply from PC DRAM toward server DRAM (TrendForce Weekly Radar, Oct 12, 2026).

What changed this week (Oct 19โ22, 2026)
- One PC builder's supplier notice: U.S. system builder StinceBuilt posted on Oct 19, 2026 that it had received an industry notice of DDR5 price increases of 10โ15% effective that week, and that one vendor, which it didn't name, cancelled open orders to re-price them. StinceBuilt said its existing customer orders would keep their original prices (Wccftech, Oct 20, 2026). This is a supplier price to one builder, not a store price, and not a market-wide figure.
- A different 10โ15%: TrendForce's Sep 30, 2026 forecast is that conventional DRAM contract prices (what PC and phone makers pay suppliers) rise 10โ15% quarter over quarter in the fourth quarter of 2026 (TrendForce, Sep 30, 2026). It is a quarterly forecast, not this week's store prices.
- Spot market: TrendForce's Oct 21, 2026 spot update said DDR5 supply remains tight and suppliers are clearly reluctant to sell, while DDR4 trading stayed subdued despite a 0.84% gain in mainstream chip prices (TrendForce, Oct 21, 2026). Spot prices are for memory chips, not retail kits.
Will RAM prices go down in 2027?
None of the forecasts we read expects a quick drop. TrendForce said on Oct 12, 2026 that memory and storage supply remain tight well into 2027 (TrendForce Weekly Radar), and on Sep 30, 2026 that PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as more capacity shifts to servers (TrendForce). Samsung's memory executive vice president Kim Jaejune said the shortage will last through 2027, possibly into 2028 (PCWorld, Jul 31, 2026). These are forecasts. We'll update this page when new ones come out.
Should you buy RAM now or wait?
- Your PC is broken or you need it for work: buy now, but only the capacity you need. Slower kits can cost less: Tom's Hardware found a 32GB DDR5-4800 kit at $399 when the cheapest 32GB DDR5-6000 kit was $449.97 (Oct 14, 2026).
- Upgrading from 16GB to 32GB: if your PC runs fine today, waiting costs you nothing. If you buy, match your current kit's speed, or replace both sticks with a matched 2 x 16GB kit.
- Building a new PC: compare a full DDR5 build with a CPU, motherboard and RAM bundle (see below), and price the RAM before you choose the platform.
- You can wait six months or more: waiting is reasonable, but the forecasts above don't promise lower prices by then, so set a target price and check it rather than waiting for a date.
Is now a bad time to build a PC?
It's an expensive time to buy the memory. Two things can soften it, per Tom's Hardware (Oct 14, 2026): Newegg combo bundles that pair RAM with a motherboard, CPU or SSD could save as much as $358, and price increases have been reaching pre-built PCs more slowly than DIY parts (Tom's Hardware, Oct 14, 2026). If you already own a DDR4 platform, keeping it for another year can cost less than a new DDR5 build. Buying for gaming? See our PC game sale calendar 2026 and our Newegg deals page.
Will Black Friday 2026 bring cheaper RAM?
We don't know yet, and we won't guess a number: we don't predict Black Friday prices. See when each store's sale starts on our Black Friday 2026 dates page. A Black Friday RAM price is only a real deal if it's well below what the same kit cost in the weeks before: we use 20% below the usual price as our bar for posting a deal.
Is buying used RAM safe?
It can be. Buy from sellers with strong feedback and a return window, match the exact kit (model number, speed and timings), and test it as soon as it arrives so you can still return it. Our eBay open-box and refurbished deals guide covers how to read a listing, and our eBay deals page lists the eBay deals we've checked.
How to check a RAM price before you buy
- Compare the price per GB, not just the kit price: divide the price by the total capacity.
- Look at the kit's recent prices on more than one store before you trust a "was" price. Our guide on how to tell if a deal is real shows how.
- If the price drops after you buy, check the store's price match policy before you return and rebuy.

FAQ
Why is RAM so expensive right now?
Memory makers are putting more of their factory capacity into server memory for AI data centers, so less goes to PC memory. TrendForce said on Sep 30, 2026 that suppliers keep prioritizing advanced capacity for high-performance server products, keeping the market undersupplied, and its Oct 12, 2026 Weekly Radar said suppliers are shifting supply from PC DRAM toward server DRAM.
Will RAM prices go down in 2027?
The forecasts we found don't expect relief soon. TrendForce (Oct 12, 2026) expects memory supply to stay tight well into 2027, and Samsung's memory chief said in July 2026 the shortage could last through 2027, possibly into 2028 (PCWorld, Jul 31, 2026). Forecasts can be wrong, so treat them as forecasts, not promises.
Did DDR5 prices go up 10-15% this week?
That figure comes from one U.S. PC builder, StinceBuilt, which posted on Oct 19, 2026 that a supplier had notified it of 10-15% DDR5 increases that week (reported by Wccftech, Oct 20, 2026). It is a supplier price to one builder, not a store price. Separately, TrendForce forecast on Sep 30, 2026 that conventional DRAM contract prices will rise 10-15% quarter over quarter in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Should I buy DDR4 or DDR5 now?
Buy what your motherboard takes. DDR4 has gone up too: RamRadar's index shows desktop DDR4 at $7.52 per GB on Oct 1, 2026 and $8.66 per GB on Oct 22, 2026. If you already have a DDR4 platform, keeping it and adding memory can cost less than moving to a new DDR5 build.
Is 16GB or 32GB of RAM enough in 2026?
16GB is enough for web browsing, office work and many older games. 32GB (2 x 16GB) is the usual pick for a new gaming or creator build. With prices this high, buy the amount you need now rather than extra for later.
Is buying used RAM safe?
It can be. Buy from sellers with strong feedback and a return window, match the exact kit (same model number, speed and timings), and test it as soon as it arrives, so you can return it if it fails. Our eBay open-box and refurbished guide covers how to check a listing.
